Adorn Home Improvements - How to repair a door or window screen

Now that summer is in full swing you have surely begun to notice and battle, the annual invasion of mosquitoes and flies. For those of you who do not have air conditioning or if you simply enjoy the cool evening breezes this is also the time of year to dig out your door and window screens. Before you install your screens they should be checked for holes and tears that would allow these six legged pests into your home.

Fortunately, you can repair holes and tears up to about 3 inches in diameter and when done properly, the patch will be barely visible. Holes that are larger than 3 inches generally call for replacing the screen fabric or the screen itself. The method of repair will also depend on if the screen fabric is fiberglass or metal.

If your screen is fiberglass you can patch a hole by placing the edges together and daubing them with some clear nail polish. The nail polish acts as an adhesive and holds the edges together while repelling any external weather conditions.

If your screen is metal or if part of the screen is missing it will be necessary to purchase a pre-made self-adhesive patch kit. To attach a metal screen patch, unravel the edges of the patch and bend the end wires at a 90 degree angle. Carefully then push the bent ends through the screen weave covering the hole and bend the end wires back to their starting position. To complete the repair, trim off any excess lengths of wire cutters.
