According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), an estimated 50 million Americans suffer from arthritis pain. With an aging baby-boomer population, that number is expected to grow to as high as 67 percent by the year 2030. If you?re suffering from arthritis pain, here are some tips to reduce the painful effects of the condition.
- Take over-the-counter medication. For mild to moderate pain, take acetaminophen or aspirin. For more intense pain, try taking the over-the-counter medications ibuprofen or naproxen. If pain still persists, consult your physician.
- Make lifestyle changes. For example, being overweight places additional strain on your joints. Start a weight-loss program and achieve a healthy BMI (body mass index) for your height and gender to remove that strain. Additionally, smoking damages the connective tissue. Quit smoking so the connective tissues can repair itself around your joints.
- Avoid exercise for a few days. If pain is persistent, take a break from your regular exercise routine and allow the inflamed joints to rest. When you do begin exercising again, choose lower impact exercises such as cycling and swimming over running and heavy weight training.
- Place heat on the inflamed joint. This can be done in several ways. Taking a hot shower, utilizing a heating pad or wax bath are all ways that the joints may be heated. Follow the heating session with some light stretching around the inflamed joint.
- Go for an acupuncture session. Locate a licensed acupuncturist in your area and have her treat the arthritis with one or more sessions.
- Utilize a cane or walking aid. The problem with ankle, knee or hip arthritis is that you still have to walk to get places. Utilizing a cane or walking aid allows you to remove some of the pressure that is placed on those joints from normal movement.
- Adjust your position and stretch. If you?re someone who is in an office all day or consistently working in one position, take a moment to alter that position and stretch. For example, if you are in front of a computer most of the day, take a break and stretch your hands, neck, back and legs. This stops your joints from being ?locked? in one position for too long a period of time.
You never know when you might have an arthritic flare-up; when you feel one coming on, take a break and rest. You just might minimize the pain.
