France seeks tough UN action in Syria

France will propose making United Nations envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan for Syria obligatory by invoking the U.N.'s "Chapter 7" provision, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Wednesday, describing the conflict there as a "civil war."

Fabius said he hoped Russia would agree to using Chapter 7, a measures which can authorise the use of force, and he said that a no-fly zone was another option under discussion.

"We propose making the implementation of the Annan plan compulsory," Fabius told a news conference. "We need to pass to the next speed at the Security Council and place the Annan plan under Chapter 7 - that is to say make it compulsory under pain of very heavy sanctions."

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Wednesday that Syria was on the verge of collapse and that he would be holding urgent talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Thursday to ensure implementation of the plan brokered by Annan.

"Syria is on the edge of a collapse or of a deadly sectarian civil war," he told reporters in Kabul where he will attend a regional conference on Afghanistan.

Russia's Foreign Minister defended his country's sale of arms to Syria Wednesday and accused the United States of supplying rebels with weapons to fight against the government, Reuters reported.

"We are not violating any international law in performing these contracts," Reuters quoted Lavrov as saying in response to a question about arms sales to Syria at a news conference in Tehran shown on Iranian state television.

"They (the United States) are providing arms and weapons to the Syrian opposition that can be used in fighting against the Damascus government," he said, speaking through an interpreter.

Neither his comments, nor the translation, could immediately be verified by other news sources.

Russian state news agency RIA Novosti noted that Russia is the biggest supplier of arms to Syria, and maintains its only military base outside the former Soviet Union there. It said Russia President Vladimir Putin earlier this month claimed Russian arms were not being used against pro-democracy protesters in Syria, a claim derided as "patently untrue" by U.S. State Secretary Hillary Clinton on Tuesday.

Clinton says Russia is sending gunships to Syria, could escalate conflict 'dramatically'

Russia, which is resisting Western and Gulf Arab pressure to take a tougher stance toward Assad, says a proposed conference would lend support to a peace plan by U.N. international mediator Kofi Annan.

The U.S. says it does not believe Iran, Assad's strongest regional ally, is ready to play a constructive role in Syria. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said last week that it was "hard to imagine inviting a country that is stage-managing the Assad regime's assault on its people."

On Monday, U.N. monitors said Syrian helicopters had fired on rebel strongholds north of Homs and said many women and children were reported trapped in the city, calling for "immediate and unfettered access" to the conflict zones.

International mediator Kofi Annan also expressed grave concern about violence in Homs and in Haffeh, a mainly Sunni Muslim town near the Mediterranean coast, where the U.S. State Department said it feared a "potential massacre".

The U.N. observers, tasked with monitoring Annan's April ceasefire deal which failed to stem the violence in Syria, have instead been cataloguing mass killings, bombings and clashes in which many hundreds of Syrians have died.

The outside world, divided in its approach towards Assad's crackdown on a 15-month-old uprising, has been unable to halt the violence despite broad international support for Annan's peace plan.

It was the first time the U.N. monitors have verified repeated allegations by activists that Assad's forces have fired from helicopters in the military crackdown on rebels.

Gene inactivation drives spread of melanoma

Monday, June 11, 2012

Why do some cancers spread rapidly to other organs and others don't metastasize? A team of UNC researchers led by Norman Sharpless, MD, have identified a key genetic switch that determines whether melanoma, a lethal skin cancer, spreads by metastasis.

Treating melanoma is extremely challenging. The cancer spreads rapidly and to sites in the body that are remote from the original cancer site. Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer, and advanced melanoma kills more than 8600 Americans each year. It is the most common form of cancer in young adults, aged 25-29 and the incidence of people under 30 developing melanoma is increasing fast ? more than 50 percent in young women since 1980.

In a paper published today in the journal Cancer Cell, a team from UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center demonstrates that inactivating a gene called LKB1 (or STK11) causes non-aggressive melanoma cells to become highly metastatic when tested in a variety of models using tumors from humans and mice. While Sharpless and his colleagues showed a role for LKB1 inactivation in lung cancer metastasis, the effects of LKB1 loss on melanoma spread is even more dramatic.

"Although we are not totally certain how LKB1 loss promotes metastasis in multiple cancer types, one important effect is the loss of LKB1 starts a chain reaction, activating a family of proteins called SRC kinases, which are known to drive metastasis," said Sharpless, who is associate director for translational research at UNC Lineberger.

"Loss of LKB1 occurs in about 30 percent of lung cancer and 10 percent of melanoma, and ongoing studies at UNC and elsewhere will determine if these LKB1 deficient tumors have a worse prognosis. These data suggest LKB1 deficient cancers will be more likely to metastasize, and therefore more likely to be incurable."

"The work is exciting because the laboratory model reliably replicates distant metastases, helping us better understand what treatments may work for melanoma that has spread. While several targeted drugs have recently been approved by the FDA for metastatic disease, these targeted mutations don't indicate whether the disease is likely to metastasize," said Stergios Moschos, MD, clinical associate professor of hematology/oncology. Moschos works in the area of drug development for melanoma but was not involved in this research project.

Obama to award Medal of Freedom to Israeli president

Israel President Shimon PeresShimon Peres has reached the United States on a four day official visit where he is to be awarded with the Medal of Freedom by his counterpart Barack ObamaBarack Obama in an investiture ceremony. Shimon Peres is also expected to raise a host of issues with President Obama including the controversial nuclear program of Iran and fate of a convicted Israeli spy. The United States and Israel have got deep relationship and mutual respect for each other. Perhaps, the deep friendship between both the countries may be the reason behind the awarding of the prestigious award.

By the way, what is the Medal of Freedom? The medal is awarded to dignitaries across the globe by President of the United States for their contribution in the following three sectors.

1. The individual may have contributed to the security or national interests of the United States.

2. He/ She may have struggled hard to establish world peace

3. The individual should have cultural or some other significant public or private ventures

The individuals are either selected by the president himself or they are recommended to him for the award by the Distinguished Civilian Service Awards Board. According to statistics available on Wikipedia website, President Bill ClintonBill Clinton awarded 88 medals while President George W Bush awarded 81 medals among the meritorious individuals. President Barack Obama will be awarding the 32nd medal to his Israeli counterpart on Wednesday.

It is widely reported that President Shimon Peres is also carrying a sign petition with him to be presented before Barack Obama as a plea to get an Israeli convicted spy Jonathan PollardJonathan Pollard released. The issue will be raise on humanitarian grounds and it is yet to be seen what will be response of President Obama towards the petition. Israeli president is also scheduled to have detailed meetings with Defense Secretary Leon PanettaLeon Panetta and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to discuss different issues of bilateral interests.

Upon his arrival at Blair House, the US president?s official guest house, Israeli president spoke to media and said Israel is perturbed over repeated failure of talks of the international community with Iran. He said the issue will be raised with President Obama during the meeting. Israel is frustrated with Iran as the latter does not appear to budge on the nuclear program. It may be pertinent to mention here that Israel has been pushing the United States for the last couple of years to attack nuclear sites of Iran. Israel deems there is no other way to get the nuclear enrichment program of Iran halted but a military operation.

Observers believe that it could be a political gimmick on part of President Obama to award the Israeli president to garner the Jewish vote. Let?s see how the Jewish community living in the United States responds to the Medal of Freedom being awarded to Shimon Peres.

Mom's survival checklist: 5 tips for sanity - The Orange County Register

There must be something in the water in Orange County. I have three friends due in the next four weeks. Baby fever is alive and well!

In honor of baby fever and moms-to-be, I?ve assembled a list of the top advice and wisdom I've learned from the moms in my life.

These tips can apply to new or veteran moms. Read on and let me know what you?d add to this mom?s survival checklist.

1. Get ready for the day. First things first. If you only follow one piece of advice from this column, it's this: get yourself showered or at least dressed at your first opportunity. If you don't, you can all too easily fall into the trap of staying in your pajamas all day long, which does a number on you mentally and physically. (Trust me, I would know!)

Think of it this way: On an airplane, in case of emergency, we're told to put on our oxygen mask first, before our child?s. And it makes sense ? we can?t be of help to our kiddos if we pass out, right? So apply that to your everyday life as a mom. You won't be much good to your family if you don't first take care of yourself.

2. Get out. Once you are dressed, get outside. Even if it's for a 15-minute walk, the fresh air will make a difference for you and your child. For a change of scenery, drive or walk to a park or outdoor shopping venue. Here in Orange County we're fortunate to have plenty of outdoor strolling options nearby, from Irvine Spectrum Center to Fashion Island to beautiful beaches and boardwalks.

3. Trust your instincts. If you think something's "off" with your child, you're probably right. Trust your inner voice and don't let anyone or any book tell you differently. This also applies to medical advice. Play an active role in your child's health care, and don't be afraid to ask questions. Parents know their children better than any pediatrician and will always be their best advocates.

4. Know when to say "no." I'm still working on this one. (I can hear my husband laughing already). I want to do it all -- maintain my freelance work, keep a clean and organized home and prepare home-cooked meals -- all while being the best mom and wife I can be. I've discovered this is close to impossible, despite my best intentions. Set attainable goals, and celebrate them when you accomplish them. Be the best mom and partner you can be without sacrificing your sanity and health.

5. Talk to other moms. This is especially important for new moms, but remains a constant throughout motherhood. We need to talk it out with other moms who get it. Who else can empathize with teething woes or breastfeeding issues? Whether you already have a social circle to rely on or whether you seek out new mommy friends, just get social. There are great opportunities for connecting with new moms in OC, including groups like SoCal Moms Connect or classes and support groups at Granola Babies in Costa Mesa or Milkalicious in Aliso Viejo.

Why Hackers Are Targeting India

Over 100 hackers rallied in Mumbai, New Delhi and sixteen other cities, protesting a countrywide ban on file-sharing websites like the Pirate Bay.

"We are protesting arbitrary, extra-judicial censorship, where not even the government knows -- or cares -- who controls what," one protestor explained. Wearing Guy Fawkes' masks and chanting slogans against the "Great Indian Firewall," participants condemned a recent government order forcing ISPs to shut down file-sharing sites.

Copyrightlabs last month received government permission to ban sites like Pastebin and Vimeo, which sometimes host copyrighted material. The Indian government is steadily moving to whitewash the country's Internet, provoking outrage from opponents like Anonymous who support online freedom.

India's Information Technology Act already mandates that search engines, websites and ISPs remove "disparaging" or "blasphemous" content within two days of receiving complaints. The country's politicians depend on support from on various minority groups like Muslims and Sikhs. And they are unlikely to vote for lawmakers who do nothing to prohibit online images of Muhammad eating pork or graffiti on the Golden Temple.

Given this situation, India's officials want to go even further in prohibiting questionable material from the Internet. They recently announced plans for a 50-member United Nations-backed Committee for Internet Related Policies, which would purge "offensive" images and content from India's Internet.

India may win additional support for its plan if the U.N.'s International Telecommunications Union gains more power at the World Conference on International Telecommunication in December. Should U.N. members vote to increase the ITU's online influence, governments like India's will enjoy heightened control over internal Internet affairs.

Currently, U.S.-based non-profits set international regulatory standards, making it difficult for governments to darken sites without official consequences.

In response to these pending censorship measures, Anonymous has taken to the streets and launched distributed denial of service attacks at India's government websites. The collective crippled sites for the Indian Supreme Court and All India Congress Committee, vowing to continue such hacks until India takes online freedom seriously.

Anonymous' recent actions suggest it will continue to fight India's censorship plans with every available resource. And, if other countries follow suit, the collective could be very busy indeed.

Alok Dixit, a New Delhi protestor, summed it up. "The government is bringing censorship through the back door and we will oppose it," he insisted, challenging politicians to reconsider their Internet policies.

Apple brags, sells 365 million iOS devices

Apple has never shied away from taking a few shots at Android during its WWDC keynotes, and why would 2012 be any different. Just before taking the wraps off iOS 6, Apple took some time to toss out a few numbers highlighting its spectacular sales and sizable user base. All told, by the end of March, the company had moved 365 million iOS devices, with the vast majority of them (80 percent) running iOS 5 -- a point they made sure to drive home with a graphic comparing the install base of Android 4.0. But, sales alone mean nothing without an active user community. Which is why Cupertino was so happy to report that 140 million iMessage users were sending more than one billion messages each day, for a grand total of 150 billion SMS and MMS missives. Push notifications have also clearly taken off in a big way, with 1.5 trillion having graced our notification screens.

Apple redesigns its MacBook Pro with new screen, thinner body

11 hrs.

Apple is returning to the high end with a redesigned MacBook Pro, which they announced Monday at their Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco. The new model has a?high-resolution screen and is significantly thinner, and of course has the latest tech inside. Starting at $2199, it's also the most expensive notebook they've offered in years.

For now, they're calling it the "next generation MacBook Pro," in order to distinguish it from the original MBP, which will still be for sale. The screen is the most important upgrade, as it both enables new content in OS X and necessitates new hardware in the laptop itself. It's 15.4 inches and?2880x1800, which is twice as many pixels in each direction as previous 15-inch MacBooks. The old displays are likely an endangered species now; Apple is rapidly upgrading all its products to high-resolution.

The screen, like the iPad's, is improved in every way: contrast, resolution, viewing angle, reflectance. But of course it draws a lot of power, so inside the laptop they've packed a ton of battery. They claim it still gets over 7 hours, though.

Inside, they've got the newest iteration of Intel's Core processors, room for up to 16GB of RAM, and a maximum of 768GB of flash memory. Upgrading, as always with Apple notebooks, will?be extremely expensive: adding 300 MHz and 256GB of storage to the default configuration will run you $600.

On the outside, the new MacBook Pro is almost as thin as a MacBook Air, though it's quite a bit heavier. It doesn't have that line's signature wedge shape, but rather is 0.71 inches thick all the way around. Tipping the scales at 4.5 pounds, it's not exactly a bundle of feathers, but the power to weight ratio is more than competitive.

The speakers have been improved, and there are now USB 3.0 and HDMI out, as well as the expected Thunderbolt and SD card ports.

There are also numerous changes to OS X, such as apps that take advantage of the new resolution; Mountain Lion, as version 10.8 is being called, isn't available yet, but anyone buying a new laptop will be able to upgrade for free.

The original?MacBook Pro and Air also received modest spec bumps (new processors and more storage space), but the spotlight was clearly on the next-generation hardware. And surprisingly, they are all shipping today. More information and details can be found, as always, at Apple's site.

Urban Kids Have More Food Allergies Than Their Country Cousins

60-Second Science60-Second Science | Health

Six percent of children in rural areas had a food allergy, compared with 10 percent of kids in urban centers. Sophie Bushwick reports.

More 60-Second Science

City kids have a smorgasbord of food choices. But they also face food allergies more than do their country cousins.

Researchers mapped food allergies in children across the U.S. And they found more cases per capita in areas with higher population densities. The work is in the journal Clinical Pediatrics. [Ruchi S. Gupta et al, Geographic Variability of Childhood Food Allergy in the United States]

The scientists collected allergy information on more than 38,000 Americans under age 18, and then sorted the information by zip code. Six percent of children in rural areas had a food allergy. But that number jumped to 10 percent of kids in urban centers. Peanut and shellfish allergies in particular were more common. Although the frequency of allergies varied by location, their severity did not.

What explains this trend? It could be that rural dirt is good?in the country, children?s immune systems get challenged early and often, and thus more properly trained. Or it could be that urban dirt is bad?city children deal with pollutants that may predispose them toward allergies.

Solving this puzzle could help protect kids from common foods that can do them uncommon harm.

?Sophie Bushwick

A bite of the Apple for SanDisk and Nova

Friday saw the end of the best week we have had so far this year, with rises of around 4% in all the indices. The previous week, the indices fell by more than 3%. What is interesting is that this manic-depression is rife not just in the markets themselves, but also in the forecasts of the various experts. The headlines veer almost daily from predictions of imminent total collapse to predictions of a rally of unprecedented strength.

In the end, next month's financials and guidance season will set the direction, as will the severity of the profit warnings we will be treated to beforehand, some of which we will probably start seeing this week.

In the technology sector, this will be mainly Apple's (AAPL) week. This evening, at the opening of its annual developers' week in San Francisco, the company will announce a revamp of its computer lines, something it has not done for a long time.

Besides computers, the speculation ranges from the unveiling of a new iPhone via the launch of a mini-iPad to the unveiling of a first television, which the late Steve Jobs hinted at, a hint lately repeated by current CEO Tim Cook. However, the chances that these devices will be launched today are low. Whoever believes that we are in for big surprises today will point to Cook's recent remark that "we're going to double down on secrecy on products."

Much talk about NAND

Two stocks that I hold here, which rose last week by three times the rise in the indices, are connected to the Apple product food chain. The first, SanDisk (SNDK) is 13% up on its annual low. Investors are starting to believe the hints dropped by the company's management that if in the first half year they collapsed because of the collapse of the customers routed by Apple, in the second half SanDisk will grow again, because it will sell to the "market leaders". You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to understand that this means Apple and Samsung.

It looks as though we will still not find out this evening what exactly SanDisk will sell to Apple later on in the year, but what is certain is that there will be a great deal of talk about storage on NAND chips, that is, SSD. This is a market that SanDisk is counting on very heavily. SSDs will be part of the new thin computers that Apple will launch today to compete with the ultrabooks, some of which were launched last week at Computex in Taiwan.

Another stock that rose 13% was Nova Measuring Instruments Ltd. (Nasdaq:NVMI; TASE:NVMI). They must be working round the clock in Rehovot in order to supply quantities of measuring systems to the biggest chip subcontractor in the world, TSMC (TSM) of Taiwan. These are systems for 28 nano production lines on which the most advanced processors by Qualcomm (QCOM), Nvidia (NVDA), and others, are produced. There is a considerable shortage of these processors, because TSMC and other companies did not anticipate the strength of the demand, which means that they are now speeding up investment.

Qualcomm is the supplier of the processors for Apple's iPads and iPhones, and if Apple designed the next generation of iPhones on the basis of Qualcomm processors produced on 28 nano lines, it has a problem, because the shortage is expected to continue until the end of the year at least. Among the advantages of these processors is that consume much less energy than processors fabricated on 40 nano lines, and their performance is better.

Further collaboration between Juniper and Radware?

I believe that, although Nova is a very small equipment supplier, it is one of the suppliers that is being pressed to supply systems for TSMC's 28 nano lines. This is because these are very advanced lines that require more measuring systems of the kind supplied by Nova than the lines employing production geometry of 40 nano. Investment bank JP Morgan estimates that TSMC is adding another two 28 nano production lines, to reach five production lines at it three fabs.

To end with, Juniper Networks (JNPR) is holding its annual analysts' day tomorrow, and that is presumably where it will amplify on its collaboration with Radware (RDWR). The two companies announced an OEM agreement in routers for communication providers last year, an agreement that will boost Radware's profitability this year, because it concerns software.

Last month, analyst Ittai Kidron of Oppenheimer wrote about another OEM agreement, also concerning software but much bigger, for switches for computing centers. We have yet to hear about such an agreement from the companies themselves, but if it's true, we will very likely hear about it tomorrow.

Ex-British prime minister challenges Murdoch for misleading inquiry

LONDON (Reuters) - Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown accused media tycoon Rupert Murdoch on Monday of misleading a government-sponsored inquiry into press ethics with incorrect testimony alleging Brown had threatened war against Murdoch's company.

"This conversation never took place. I am shocked and surprised that it should be suggested," Brown told the Leveson inquiry. "This call did not happen. The threat was not made."

"I find it shocking," Brown said."This did not happen. There is no evidence that it happened other than Mr Murdoch's but it didn't happen."

Murdoch had told the inquiry under oath that Brown phoned him in September 2009 after the Sun newspaper started supporting the Conservative Party. Brown vowed to wage war on Murdoch's company in revenge, he testified.

"We were talking more quietly than you or I are now - he said, 'Well, your company has declared war on my government and we have no alternative but to make war on your company,'" Murdoch told the inquiry in April.

When pressed on how a serving prime minister could make such a threat, Murdoch told the inquiry: "I don't think he was in a very balanced state of mind".

Brown, who served as prime minister from 2007 to 2010, said that Murdoch was wrong about both the date and the contents of the phone call.

Statements submitted to a media watchdog by five of Brown's advisers, and seen by Reuters, show none of the five heard Brown threaten Murdoch on the call.

Aides to Brown, including his special adviser, director of strategy and deputy chief of staff, said in statements submitted to the Press Complaints Commission last year that Brown made no such threat on the call, which took place in November not September as Murdoch had said.

"I listened to the phone call between Mr Brown and Mr. Murdoch in November 2009," Stewart Wood, special adviser to the Prime Minister's office, said in a statement dated October 2011 that Reuters has seen.

"At no point in the conversation was threatening language of any sort used by either Mr Brown or Mr Murdoch," Wood said.

In one of the other corroborating statement, lawmaker Michael Dugher, wrote: "At no time did Mr Brown threaten the position of News International. Both Mr. Brown and Mr. Murdoch were entirely courteous and calm."

A former British leader accusing Murdoch of misleading the inquiry under oath will further tarnish the reputation of the world's most powerful media tycoon in a country which is home to some of his biggest newspaper and broadcasting interests.

A British parliamentary committee which investigated allegations of illegal phone-hacking by Murdoch publications has already deemed the Australian-born tycoon unfit to manage a major global company.

The cross-party parliamentary committee said in May that Murdoch was ultimately responsible for the illegal phone hacking that has corroded his global media empire and convulsed Britain's political elite.

BROWN'S SON

Brown also challenged a version of events given by Murdoch's deputy, Rebekah Brooks, about a Sun report that Brown's four-month-old son Fraser had been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.

Brooks, a close Murdoch confidante who was charged last month with interfering with a police investigation into the phone hacking scandal, told the inquiry the Browns had given their backing to the story.

"I have never sought to bring my children into the public domain," Brown said. He denied his consent had been given to publish the story.

"I find it sad that even now in 2012 members of the News International staff are coming to this inquiry and maintaining this fiction."

The former prime minister has questioned whether the paper had hacked into his son's medical records to get the story. Brooks has denied this and Murdoch has said the story was broken when a father of another child tipped off the newspaper.

"A father from the hospital in a similar position had called us, told us," Murdoch said in his testimony.

But Brown told the inquiry that the National Health Service in Fife had apologized to his family because information about his son came from NHS staff.

"There were only a few medical people who knew that our son had this condition," Brown said.

He said the NHS in Fife "now believe it highly likely that there was unauthorized information given by a medical or working member of the NHS staff that allowed the Sun through this middle man to publish this story," Brown said.

The Sun ran a story in July 2011 under the headline "Brown Wrong" which said the source of the story was a "shattered dad" who had a son with the genetic disorder and that Brown's wife, Sarah, had given the newspaper consent to run the story.

Brooks said on May 11 at Leveson that a small donation was made to the cystic fibrosis charity at the request of the man.

But Reuters has seen a copy of a letter from the chief executive of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Ed Owen, saying the Trust found no record of any donation by The Sun or News International at the time of the story.

The Sun newspaper also reported that its readers had helped Cystic Fibrosis Trust double its donations in the wake of their story about Fraser. But the letter from the Cystic Fibrosis Trust showed they had seen no significant increase in donations.

Regardless of who the source was, the subject of a front page splash detailing the serious illness of a four-month baby is likely to prove unedifying and garner sympathy for Brown, who has rarely appeared in public since he left office in 2010.

Murdoch described a relationship with Brown - whose political career effectively ended when he lost an election to incumbent Prime Minister David Cameron in 2010 - that included meals which their wives attended and conversations on topics ranging from charity to the war in Afghanistan.

Brooks told the Leveson inquiry she formed a friendship with Sarah Brown and that they had had a "pyjama party" at the prime minister's official country residence, Chequers, with Murdoch's daughter, Elisabeth, and his wife, Wendi.

But Murdoch said their relationship worsened after his media companies opposed Brown ahead of the 2010 election.

Brown told parliament in 2011 that News International was part of a "criminal-media-nexus" that had broken the law on an industrial scale.

Finding book topics to write about vs flogging a dead horse

Last night I had an incredibly great time at the PSASA. Unfortunately it meant that I missed a day writing at 750 Words. Given that I was on a 67 day streak this is quite a big dip for me.

When you choose a book topic don't pick a dead horse

When you choose a book topic don't pick a dead horse

Robin Pullen suggested that I take my talk, refine it as a workshop and then sell it. Both physically and online as a webinar. But to tell a speaker that when you start thinking speaking you stop thinking writing is almost impossible.

I don?t want to say I told you so but I know I missed 750 Words yesterday because my focus was not on writing but on speaking about writing. But, with that being said, let me bring some value to the conversation.

Last night I ran through my BLOCK & CRAM method in just over an hour which means that I touched too lightly on a number of things. Just for my own notes I think that it would be prudent to not down what I said, or what I meant to say of what I write down is not what I said (See, there we are back to the difference between speaking and writing).

One thing I mentioned is a method of determining a loose structure for the manuscript you are going to write. What you do is to take ten books on the same or similar topics to the book that you want to write. Look at the table of contents and list every topic in all ten books, and then weigh and arrange the topics according to your expertise and interests.

Two other methods to add to and to expand on this list of topics is The List and Mind Mapping.

Both these need to be done by hand, on paper and with a timer. I suggest ten minutes, repeated until you have exhausted the subject.

The List

For The List you take a notepad and write on the top of the page:

?What I know about (my subject I?m going to write about) is:?

And then in ten minutes time list as many facts, truths, laws, conventions, delusions and confusions you know about your topic. After ten minutes set the timer again and go again. If you run out of steam, draw a line, write the above intro again and then carry on.

First, you will both be surprised by how little and how much you know about your topic. And second, some things will really grip you as you write them down. Star these because they will be very useful in determining the focus of your book.

Mind Mapping

On the surface Mind Mapping seems similar to The List but it turns a different field.

Take a blank piece of paper and write your topic in the middle. Draw lines away from the middle and then free associate what the topic makes you think about.

Say for instance that you plan to write on Personal Money Management. You might then draw a line which says Personal Values. From there you can then go to Family, Pets, the Cost of Veterinary Services and eventually ending up with Gold Fish vs Labrador.

Again this will give you a rich field of information to explore your subject area. But it will also give you an angle, possibly stories or analogies, that will help you treat your topic in a very unique way. I would imagine that a Money book with a Dog focus will be very unique in a field where almost everybody else starts and ends with Compound Interest.

Now remember, if you use all three methods you will have more topics than you can possibly deal with in just one book. You have to take your list and cull out anything that bores you. If you think something has been done to death then don?t keep it on your list. You are going to need all the spark you can get to get your own writing done and you do not want to be flogging a dead horse.

Are there any other methods you think you might use either to construct a list of topics, or to cut it down to the few you really want to write on?

Home Business Marketing Tips

Marketing, as contrasted to advertising, is essentially a long-term effort. It mandates a huge amount of time and effort compared to some other programs but is perhaps the most important, depending on which product or service is featured in your particular Home Business. The first step in your marketing efforts should be a business plan. And the center of your plans is a specific goal your Home Business is trying to achieve. Marketing is the vehicle that will propel your Home Business toward your goal and make the best possible use of your budget as well as the most effective use of your time.?When you work as an independent consultant or home business, you alone are the sole marketer for your entity. In other words, there is not really a team to call upon for your marketing needs. And yet, you seek the exact same result, which is expanded awareness of the product or service offered by your Home Business.

This being the case, then obviously a certain degree of salesmanship is essential in this ultra-competitive marketplace we are currently in, whether you business involves fly fishing in South Dakota or sailing off the South Carolina coastline.?

Perhaps the most overlooked aspect of this marketing and salesmanship is the follow-up. Essentially, there is follow up with your current base and second, there is follow up with your potential customers. The fact is many businesses do not consistently follow up with their current customer base. When following up with your potential customers, or prospects, you should get a much better conversion ratio that when you first contacted them. And by no means should you neglect to follow up more than once, if necessary.?You will need to decide how often you would like to follow up with your customers or prospects. You basically want your prospect to not forget about you and to have enouph time to analyze your offer. You should also have some type of tracking system in place. Be ready to send in additional information when a prospect requests it.

Stroke risk greatest for employed middle to older ages, normal weight and no sleep apnea, habitually sleeping less than 6 hours each day

DARIEN, IL Habitually sleeping less than six hours a night significantly increases the risk of stroke symptoms among middle-age to older adults who are of normal weight and at low risk for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), according to a study of 5,666 people followed for up to three years.

The participants had no history of stroke, transient ischemic attack, stroke symptoms or high risk for OSA at the start of the study, being presented today at SLEEP 2012. Researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham recorded the first stroke symptoms, along with demographic information, stroke risk factors, depression symptoms and various health behaviors.

After adjusting for body-mass index (BMI), they found a strong association with daily sleep periods of less than six hours and a greater incidence of stroke symptoms for middle-age to older adults, even beyond other risk factors. The study found no association between short sleep periods and stroke symptoms among overweight and obese participants.

"In employed middle-aged to older adults, relatively free of major risk factors for stroke such as obesity and sleep-disordered breathing, short sleep duration may exact its own negative influence on stroke development," said lead author Megan Ruiter, PhD. "We speculate that short sleep duration is a precursor to other traditional stroke risk factors, and once these traditional stroke risk factors are present, then perhaps they become stronger risk factors than sleep duration alone."

Further research may support the results, providing a strong argument for increasing physician and public awareness of the impact of sleep as a risk factor for stroke symptoms, especially among persons who appear to have few or no traditional risk factors for stroke, she said.

"Sleep and sleep-related behaviors are highly modifiable with cognitive-behavioral therapy approaches and/or pharmaceutical interventions," Ruiter said. "These results may serve as a preliminary basis for using sleep treatments to prevent the development of stroke."

Ruiter and colleagues collected their data as part of the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study, led by George Howard, PhD, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health. REGARDS enrolled 30,239 people ages 45 and older between January 2003 and October 2007, and is continuing to follow them for health changes.

The study is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
